Dr. John Mascarenhas, Professor of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, explains that
polycythemia vera (
PV) is a type of blood cancer in which the
bone marrow overproduces red blood cells. He discusses the risks, including blood clots, bleeding, an enlarged spleen, and, for some patients, progression to myelofibrosis. Dr. Mascarenhas also explains that PV is a rare disease, affecting fewer than four people per 100,000.
